University To Build Institute For Autism

West Hartford’s University of Saint Joseph announced plans Tuesday to build a new facility that would feature a special institute for autism.

The facility, which will eventually replace the university’s 48-year-old Gengras Center, would house the existing school for children with diabilities, as well as feature a new center focusing on children with autism.

The current school serves students from 53 communities across the region, providing education and services to those 5 to 21 years of age.

With a state-of-the-art facility on its way, university President Dr. Pamela Trotman Reid says services will be able to reach more people.

“[The new building] will allow us to serve children soley with autism as well as the children who have multiple diabilities that we currently serve,” Trotman Reid said.

Trotman Reid says the new facility expected to cost nearly $10 million.
